Fellowship is a subject touched on in the Bible many times both by Jesus and his disciples, it is encouraged because it develops growth and helps maintain one's stability as a Christian, (2 Peter 3:17)3:17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

Fellowship helps open the door for anyone who has an ear and an open heart, (Phillipians 2:2)2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

It is important also for the world to see that we gather to be one with Christ so that they may be inspired to do so, (John 17:21)17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father art in me, and I in thee, that they may also be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

There are many more reasons for fellowship and many more biblical references but it all boils down to growing with Christ while getting to know your neighbor and your community.
Fellowship is not a requisite but it can be enlightening, not to mention just good fun, and remember when we gather together in His name He is there also, (Matthew 18:20)18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
